Subject: STA 231C
Title: Mathematical Statistics III
Units: 4.0
School: College of Letters and Science LS
Department: STA
Effective Term: 2008 Summer Session 1
Learning Activities
- Lecture - 3.0 hours
- Discussion - 1.0 hours
Description
Third part of three-quarter sequence on mathematical statistics. Emphasizes large sample theory and their applications. Topics include statistical functionals, smoothing methods and optimization techniques relevant for statistics.
Prerequisites
STA 231A; STA 231B
Expanded Course Description
Summary of Course Content:
Smoothing (kernel, local polynomial, splines) - 3 weeks Statistical functionals (including basic bootstrap and jackknife) - 3-4 weeks Optimization techniques (incl. EM-algorithm) - 3-4 weeks
Illustrative Reading:
Possible text and/or reference books for the various topics include: J. Shao (2003), Mathematical Statistics, Springer; K. Lange (2006), Optimization, Springer; P. Bickel and K. Doksum (2001): Mathematical Statistics 2nd ed., Pearson Prentice Hall
Potential Course Overlap:
Some of the topics listed above might also be discussed in one or the other topics course in Statistics, but at a more elementary level. Moreover, in contrast to STA 231C, these topics courses are not required, but only selective courses for a graduate student in Statistics. Consequently, STA 231C is the only course where all the Statistics graduate students are exposed to these central topics. This is in line with the idea that the STA 231-series builds the backbone of the graduate education in Statistics/ Biostatistics at the Department of Statistics at UC Davis.
