SPEAKER: Anh-Hoa Nguyen,  Gilead Sciences

TITLE: “The Application of Statistical Methods in Drug Development: An Industry Insider's Perspective”

ABSTRACT: Statisticians play an essential role in pre-clinical and clinical trials. The speaker will review the key statistical methods and study designs in pre-clinical studies and phase I-IV clinical trials. She will also share the real-word challenges in conducting clinical trials. She will discuss some useful tools that improve efficiency in drug development such as the application of East software in group sequential design and R-shiny for reviewing data in real time.

SPEAKER BIO:  Dr. Anh-Hoa Nguyen is a senior manager of biostatistics in the Department of Research and Development at Gilead Sciences. She has been intimately involved in the development of break-through drugs for hepatitis C and hepatitis B. Her expertise is on clinical study designs and prediction models using clinical and biomarker data.

Dr. Nguyen received her Master’s and Ph.D in Biostatistics at Boston University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and School of Public Health. Prior to joining Gilead Sciences, Dr. Nguyen had been working in academia and the biotechnology industry for almost two decades, with extensive experience as a biostatistician and scientist at different academic institutions such as University of California at Berkeley, Boston Medical Center, and the Framingham Heart Study. She also worked at various clinical research organizations (CROs) in both the East and West Coasts. Dr. Nguyen is currently working on her Master in Business Administration at Golden Gate University to strengthen her leadership and management skills.

Dr. Nguyen was born in Hue, Vietnam, and educated in Boston, Massachusetts.  She profoundly cherishes having been shaped by two very different cultures. Having experiences as a working mother in the corporate environment, academic institutions, and consulting firms, she hopes to inspire and support the young generation in their preparation and transformation into successful future leaders.
